Barriers of Breaking the Poverty Cycle
It is extremely difficult to break the poverty cycle. In fact, it is extremely RARE for homeless teens to escape living on the streets. If you know a youth who worked their way off the streets, that is a huge accomplishment. OK, so why is getting off the streets such a hard thing to do? There are reasons for this:
A youth cannot get out of the poverty cycle easily and so you see why this cause is so important. By being informed on this issue will benefit our community by giving us the knowledge we need to make a difference on and make our community a better place to live. And sometimes people think that homeless youth or just homeless people (commonly referred to in a rude term: 'hobos'.. This term is disrespectful in my opinion) are just lazy and lie around all day taking drugs.
Now, this argument is a complete lie, it has no facts behind it. Homeless youth have major barriers (listed above) of how it is hard to get out of the poverty cycle.
- the reasons may mirror the reasons a youth is homeless in the first place
- social isolation
- lack of self confidence
- lack of employment skills
- not completing high school
- lack of trust
- substance abuse
- having a child (teen pregnancy)
